“Present and future of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Spain”

Payment Innovation Hub and Afi, in collaboration with CaixaBank, Visa and Arval, have promoted the report Boosting green mobility: Present and future of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Spain. The study presents a detailed analysis of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Spain, examines the challenges and opportunities for the future and proposes recommendations to promote the transition towards electric mobility in the country.

The promotion of electromobility has become a fundamental pillar in the European and Spanish agendas to advance the green transition and the fight against climate change. In this context, Spain has an opportunity to consolidate itself as a benchmark in sustainable mobility, where the adoption of electric vehicles and the development of a broad, modern and efficient charging network play a key role in the future of the sector.

The research analyzes the evolution of the sector and its main challenges, highlighting the progress made and the room for improvement in the user experience. The following recommendations are highlighted below:

• Improve access and charging experience, key steps to boost the electric vehicle charging network in Spain to meet the objectives of the AFIR Regulation and meet the expectations of current and future users.
• Accelerate electric mobility by expanding the ultra-fast charging network, streamlining procedures for new installations and promoting interoperability between operators. It also recommends adopting contactless payments throughout the infrastructure and ensuring efficient and accessible aid.
